The Sober Truth

چکیده
by Lincoln Williams. Edgar Backus, Leicester6/-. This small book takes only a few minutes to read and naturally deals only very superficially with the problem of alcoholism. It is "addressed to the man in the street, and his doctor too" but it will scarcely give the latter much he doesn't know, and its main purpose must be to provide an encouragement for the sufferer and for his family, by emphasising the possibility of treatment; and an appeal to the average man not to regard alcoholism with derision or moral disapproval?which is only likely to make the patient worse. A clear understanding of the nature of compulsive drinking, it is held, will lead to the recovery of many hundreds of men and women.

Epistemic Modal Eavesdropping: a straight solution to a relativist challenge
A primary challenge from the relativist to the contextualist about epistemic modals is to explain eavesdropping data—i.e., why the eavesdropper is inclined to judge the speaker as having uttered an epistemic modal falsehood (when she is so inclined), even though the speaker’s utterance is true according to reasonable contextualist truth conditions. The issue turns in large part on the strength ...
متن کاملON Q-BITOPOLOGICAL SPACES
We study here $T_{0}$-$Q$-bitopological spaces and sober $Q$-bitopological spaces and their relationship with two particular Sierpinski objects in the category of $Q$-bitopological spaces. The epireflective hulls of both these Sierpinski objects in the category of $Q$-bitopological spaces turn out to be the category of $T_0$-$Q$-bitopological spaces. We show that only one of these Sierpinski ob...
متن کاملModal Sequent Calculi Labelled with Truth Values: Completeness, Duality and Analyticity
Labelled sequent calculi are provided for a wide class of normal modal systems using truth values as labels. The rules for formula constructors are common to all modal systems. For each modal system, specific rules for truth values are provided that reflect the envisaged properties of the accessibility relation. Both local and global reasoning are supported. Strong completeness is proved for a ...

متن کاملRobustness Analysis
Modelers often rely on robustness analysis, the search for predictions common to several independent models. Robustness analysis has been characterized and championed by Richard Levins and William Wimsatt, who see it as central to modern theoretical practice. The practice has also been severely criticized by Steven Orzack and Elliott Sober, who claim that it a non-empirical form of confirmation...
